Crew advised to file civil lawsuit against Kuwaiti employer

The captain of MT. Lady Anna, which has been stranded off Bahrain’s coast for four months, finally set foot on dry land yesterday after obtaining a shore pass from the Bahraini authorities.

Captain Saehoddin Amri met with officials from the Ministry of Labour and a representative from the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) to discuss the cases of the six other crew members who are still on board the ship.

§  BANK EMPLOYEES WILL JOIN THE STRIKE

 

 

National Trade Union Convention has given the call for All India General Strike on 7.9.2010.  Central Trade Unions, namely INTUC, HMS, AITUC, CITU, AIUTUC, UTUC, TUCC, AICCTU have jointly given the strike call.  The strike call has been given on the following issues and demands:

 

v    Alarming price rise

v    Huge job losses

v    Large scale Disinvestments in public Sector

v    Rampant violation of labour laws

v    Lack of adequate protection to unorganized workers

‘South Asian countries must work together to protect citizens from human trafficking’

The confiscation of workers’ passports by employers is a serious issue and constitutes one of the most rampant violations of human rights in Gulf States, a top union official said yesterday.

P. Haridasan, Divisional Director of Workers Rights at the International Trade Union Confederation - Asia Pacific, explained that several workers literally become slaves after their employers take away their passports.
